“The Reynolds 853 frame is extremely tasty.”
RADtouren (January 2014)
700C wheels or the newly popular 650B size – with the Rennstahl 853 Reiserad Rohloff (‘Reiserad’ is German for ‘touring bike’), long-distance riders can choose. In either case, Bernd Rohloff’s legendary 14-speed hub is on board: a gearing system that has proved itself over tens of thousands of kilometres.
The innovative hub gears are combined with a classic chain drive system. A full chain guard is fitted, which provides total protection against dirt and water, significantly extending the life of the chain.
The frame geometry, with its angled top tube, allows substantial flexibility when setting up the riding position: from stretched and sporty to more upright, where the emphasis is on comfort.
The lighting system and gears are colour-matched, and together they give a fine demonstration of how good engineering and beauty are never far apart. A Supernova USB charger is fitted, for charging electronic devices on the go. And the front thru-axle adds stability, very useful when using low-rider panniers.
The exceptionally strong frame is built with air-hardened Reynolds 853 steel; before painting, an undercoat is applied using cathodic electro deposition, which brings phenomenal corrosion resistance. The matching steel fork gives a comfortable ride thanks to its high vibration absorbance properties.
The 44mm head tube brings extra strength to the front end; the tried-and-tested BSA bottom bracket aids sourcing of spare parts. Adjustable dropouts aid the fitting of 650B or 700C wheels.
As well as the standard build using Syntace components, a Titanium package is available, that features Falkenjagd components. A further option is the Tune Components package, in a range of anodised colours. The bike can be supplied fitted with a SON Edelux II headlamp plus SON hub dynamo, rack and low-riders from Tubus, and SMS-Bluemels mudguards.
