“The Rennstahl Randonneur Rohloff combines maximum comfort with maximum touring qualities, in one elegant package.”
RADtouren (January 2016)
Many cyclists enjoy having a comfortable, upright riding position but also want to get the benefits of dropped handlebars: the choice of grip positions and the option of tucking in against the wind. With its specially-designed frame geometry, the Randonneur 853 Rohloff provides both. The steeply-angled top tube gives a wide range of sizing options when setting the relative heights of saddle and handlebars: if desired, the bars can be fitted with a 17° stem to position them significantly higher than the saddle.
The relatively low bottom bracket makes getting on and off more straightforward, and improves handling when riding heavily-laden at speed. The adjustable dropouts allow optimal chain tension and facilitate switching between 650B and 700C wheels – providing a choice between slightly increased stability and greater tyre volume or sportiness and reduced rolling resistance.
For easier maintenance, gear and brake cables are positioned externally, but the more fragile dynamo wiring runs through the inside of the frame. As well as powering the top-quality SON headlamp and Busch & Müller rear light (with built-in brake light), the SON dynamo also feeds a USB port on the stem – a very useful feature in this era of smartphones and digital cameras.
The frame is produced from air-hardened Reynolds 853 steel; before painting it is given a protective coating using cathodic electro deposition, which makes the frame exceptionally corrosion-resistant – both inside and outside the tubing. The matching steel fork gives a comfortable ride thanks to its ability to absorb vibration, and like the frame it is built to carry a load of up to 180kg.
The 44mm head tube ensures maximum stem strength, and the tried-and-tested BSA standard for the bottom bracket makes it easy to source components. The horizontally adjustable rear dropouts ensure optimal chain tension. And the Randonneur is completed with a Rohloff Speedhub gear system, along with 180mm disc brakes and racer brake levers. In addition to the regular Syntace-based configuration, customers can select a Titanium package that uses Falkenjagd equipment, or a Tune Components package which is available in a range of anodised colours. Other components include the SON Edelux II headlamp and SON hub dynamo, Tubus low-riders and rack, and SKS-Bluemels mudguards.
